We are announcing our first batch of Idea Lab events for our upcoming production of The Sonic Life of a Giant Tortoise by Toshiki Okada.


Wednesday June 4th at 8:40pm: As part of our Idea Lab Artists in Conversation Series, members of the Sonic Life… cast discuss their process of working on the play.



Wednesday June 11th at 8:40pm: Translator Aya Ogawa (Enjoy, Sonic Life…) and Peter Eckersall of CUNY discuss the work of Toshiki Okada and contemporary Japanese theater.


Friday June 13th at 9:00pm: Percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani from Osaka, Japan will team up with Saxophonist Steven Leffue for a post-show concert that fuses jazz, rock, free improvised music, and noise with traditional Japanese folk music.


Wednesday June 18 at 8:40pm: Artists in Conversation Series Pt. 2 – Director Dan Rothenberg and Choreographer David Brick discuss their process staging Sonic Life…


Thursday June 19th at 8:40pm: Yoko Shioya, the Artistic Director of The Performing Arts Dept. at The Japan Society and Baruch College Professor Shige Suzuki discuss the current fascination with Japanese pop culture, and the Japanese government’s campaign to capitalize on it.


Sunday June 22 at 5:10pm: Playwright Toshiki Okada joins us for a conversation about his work.


Wednesday June 25th at 8:40pm: Artists in Conversation Series Pt. 3 – Mimi Lien (Set Designer) and Jon Carter (Costume Designer) discuss their process designing the world of Sonic Life…


Friday June 27 at 9:00pm: The Georges will perform A Lecture on the Japanese Theater- a performance piece that utilizes found text from the internet on the subject of Japanese theater in a constructed soundscape. The Georges feature JACK Artistic Director Alec Duffy and Sonic Life… cast member Jason Quarles.
