PlayCo Internship Opportunities

Summary

The Play Company is continually accepting applications for its Internship Program in the areas of Special Events/Development, Producing, Marketing, and Artistic. The PlayCo internship program is an excellent opportunity for emerging arts professionals to gain practical, hands-on experience in a professional theatre setting. PlayCo’s goal is to provide interns with the tools and resources to grow into competitive professionals in the field through close mentoring with our staff, interns will collaborate on a diverse array of projects. These internships offer candidates a unique opportunity to develop and create an individualized program based on their strengths and areas of desired growth.

We are currently seeking interns in the following areas:

 

Special Events/Development

This internship plays a pivotal role in the fundraising management of our company. Intern(s) will work closely with our Development team on the cultivation of prospective donors, annual campaigns, and will actively manage several components of our upcoming annual gala, Cabaret Gourmet.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage and process reservations and requests for Special Events such as The Broadway Benefit and Cabaret Gourmet
  • Assist the Development department in the planning and execution of Special Events
  • Assist in the creation of content for upcoming fundraising campaigns and grant proposals
  • Assist in Patron Manager database management
  • Conduct research on potential funding opportunities
  • General administrative and office duties
  • Assist staff as needed

Producing

The Producing internship focuses on developing and contributing innovative strategies in general management within the non-profit industry. Intern(s) will work closely with our General Manager on financial management, day-to-day operations, producing our productions, as well as collaborating with other PlayCo interns on special events such as our annual gala, Cabaret Gourmet. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring arts management professionals to gain hands on experience in producing and general management.

Responsibilities include:

  • General office management under the direction of the General Management Fellow, including maintaining office calendar, supplies, and equipment in the office
  • Assist in processing weekly accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Coordinate all reporting and dues required from the various artist unions
  • Manage inventory and materials for production with production and stage management
  • Strategize best practices in company management throughout the season
  • General administrative and office duties
  • Assist staff as needed

Artistic

The Artistic internship is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in learning about literary management and seasonal artistic planning. The Artistic Intern will attend weekly literary meetings with the Producing Artistic Associate and Founding Producer to review and discuss current projects. This Intern will also be closely involved with the development and production process of our productions, as well as collaborating with other PlayCo interns on special events such as our annual gala, Cabaret Gourmet.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Artistic Associate and Founding Producer on researching, reading, and evaluating plays
  • Maintain the script database
  • Correspondence with playwrights and agents
  • Working with PlayCo artists, staff, and partner organizations to generate articles and special interest pieces for The Hub section of the PlayCo website and wider distribution¬†Assist in the planning of PlayCo Idea Lab events
  • General administrative and office duties
  • Assist staff as needed

Marketing and Outreach

The Play Company Marketing Department develops and executes marketing campaigns for our upcoming productions, manages PlayCo’s social media channels maintains the website, and actively participates in other benefits, workshops, and events throughout the season. The Marketing and Outreach Intern reports directly to the Director of Marketing and Outreach and plays a pivotal role in the growth of PlayCo’s brand and season success. The Marketing and Outreach department works in tandem with our Development Department to grow audiences, awareness, and support of the organization. Interns will get hands-on experience with all aspects of the Marketing department that will include:

  • Manage the content of social media platforms under the guidance of the Marketing staff
  • Working with PlayCo artists, staff, and partner organizations to generate articles and special interest pieces for The Hub section of the PlayCo website and wider distribution
  • Assist the Marketing staff on all seasonal and production campaigns
  • Research and development of Marketing collateral for the productions on the calendar
  • Assist in grass roots efforts of production/event marketing
  • Assist the Marketing staff in devising ticketing strategies
  • Coordinate website updates
  • General administrative and office duties

Qualifications for ideal Internship applicants

  • Knowledge of the performing arts industry
  • Reliable and detail-oriented
  • Superior time-management and organizational skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Fluency in a foreign language is a plus for Artistic internship
  • Special Event experience a plus for Development Internship
  • Experience with QuickBooks and is a plus for the Producing Internship
  • Ability to both autonomously and as a team player required
  • Both graduate and undergraduate students encouraged to apply

Time Requirements and Stipend

The Internship Program will begin at the start of each school semester, including summer. Start and end dates are flexible, and we ask a minimum commitment of 20 hours/week for all internships. Weekly schedules are flexible and able to navigate class schedules and other employment.

PlayCo offers a monthly travel stipend by pre-purchasing an unlimited monthly MetroCard to all interns who commit to a minimum of 20 hours/week. Academic credit is also available for applicable students.
